CANCER - LIPOSARCOMA -YONDELIS
I really don't know where to began? It all started about 12 years ago....my dad went to the doctor with a hernia, they found more! He has a rare cancer, called Liposarcoma. Twelve years later, two surguries and rounds a radation, his liposarcoma decided it was going to have a growth sput of it's own. Why does cancer sometimes just stay there, nothing for a long period of time and then it just over night starts to grow again? I don't know! This time he had two rounds of chemo, which he could not take well at all, so they started him on a clinical trail chemo called YONDELIS. This type of chemo has been used to treat sarcoma, breast and ovarian cancers. He has had 3 or 4 treatments now and seems to be doing okay with it. It is nothing like the typical type of chemo. Why it's in the clinical trails still, I have no idea! This chemo is given once every three to four weeks, for 24 hours. You can actually move around while taking the treatment and go about your normal activities. My dad goes home with his treatment, which is in a fanny type bag and goes back 24 hours later and they disconnect him! If you would like more information on Cancer, Liposarcoma or Yondelis, I would suggest that you type in your search engine those words. There is alot of good information out there that can help!
What is cancer?
Cancer is a disease of cells. It is an abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize (spread). (medicinenet.com)
What is Liposarcoma?
Liposarcoma is a malignancy of fat cells (see Liposarcoma in the Pediatric Medicine section of the eMedicine Journal). In adults, it is the most common soft tissue sarcoma. Liposarcoma normally appears as a slowly enlarging, painless, nonulcerated submucosal mass in a middle-aged person, but some lesions grow rapidly and become ulcerated early. Virchow first described liposarcoma in the 1860s. (emedicine.com)
What is Yondelis?
June 21, 2007 –– A compound derived from the lowly sea squirt fights a deadly type of soft–tissue cancer and holds promise for ovarian cancer as well.
The drug, generically known as trabectedin and formerly called ecteinascidin or ET–743, is branded as Yondelis by maker PharmaMar. It was originally made from a sea squirt –– the translucent, siphon–like organism also known as the mangrove tunicate. Yondelis is now synthetically manufactured.
The drug has cancer–fighting properties, although it does not appear to fight all kinds of cancer. It seems particularly effective against a particular kind cancer called myxoid liposarcoma. (medicinenet.com)
I hope some of this information is helpful in to you in learning more about fighting this awful disease!
God Bless!
