Canada Plate Block Nomenclature
Canadian plate blocks are a very popular field of philately. In stamps issued from about 1900 to 1970, there are many plate numbers and orientations. This is a simple guide to help. The plate number will often appear along the bottom and top edge but sometimes they are along the left and right edge. The numbers appear with other text in the selvage region. Plates are named after the corner that they come from, not from where the plate number lies within the selvage.
First an upper left plate is shown. It is called UL.

Second, an upper right plate is called UR.

Third, a lower left plate is called LL.

Lastly, a lower right plate is called LR.

Some plate blocks have an additional number statement along the edge.
