Beading Tips & Tricks : Solder
Question:
My question is about soldering. I would like to solder some clasps and pendants on to a bracelet I am making. I have tried using some easy jewelry solder I purchased, but when I heat up the jump ring to apply the solder the jump ring turns a yellow color. I would really like to solder the jump rings and haven't had any luck with on line searches to find the information I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
If you are soldering sterling with a torch, try pickling solution to take off the discoloration. Usually it is used in a crock pot so that it is warm when you soak the items in it. You can put your small items in a plastic basket so your can retrieve them from the pot. The solution is a mild acid and it removes discoloration for the soldering process.
You may end up buffing or tumbling the jumprings to make them bright and shinny again.
