How Much Moulding Do I Need to Frame my Picture?
Published by typroducts (Visit my Store Picture Frame Supply Store)
To determine the amount of moulding needed in feet to frame your picture, all you need is 3 numbers in inches:
- The width of the moulding you are using (in example below 1 inch)
- The height height of the inside of the frame (in example below 11inches)
- The width of the inside of the frame (in example below 14inches)
The formula is:
total footage needed = [(width of moulding x 8) + (height of frame x 2) + (width of frame x 2)] / 12
So in the example below you need:
[(1in x 8) + (11in x 2) + (14 x 2)] / 12= 58inches /12 = 4.83ft (4ft 10 inches)
Please note the height and the width should be the inside measurement of your frame.
- In the example above it would be 11in high and 14 inches wide
So for example if you plan on framing a 20x30inch poster, the width and height would be 20x30inches.
The actual total frame dimension would larger because of the moulding width around the poster/artwork. In the above example the frame would take up 16inches by 13inches on the wall because of the 1inch moulding around the 11x14in artwork.
Mat Board and Other Considerations:
Please remember if you have a 11x14 picture and you plan on framing it with a 2 inch mat border that your width and height would actually 15inches (11inches plus 2inches of mat on one side plus 2 inches of mat on other side) by 19inches (14inches plus 2inches of mat on one side plus 2 inches of mat on other side)
