Cadillac Fleetwood - The Ultimate Cadillac Fleetwood
Cadillac is one of the world's oldest car manufacturers. Founded in 1902 as an offshoot of the Ford Company, Cadillac was purchased by General Motors in 1909, becoming the company's primary division for luxury cars. The term Cadillac Fleetwood came about from a company called the Fleetwood Metal Body, which was the body manufacturer for many of Cadillac's vehicles.
Over the last 80 years, there have been a number of Cadillac Fleetwood vehicles. The 1938 Series 75, for example, had a Fleetwood body, as did the 1965 Eldorado and Sixty Special. By the late '70s, the Fleetwood line split into two different categories; the limousine model used what is known as a D-body, while the Brougham model used the shorter C-platform.
The late '80s saw more change to the Fleetwood line of Cadillac vehicles, as all of the models were shifted to a front-wheel drive platform. By the end of the decade, it became difficult to distinguish between the Fleetwood line of vehicles and Cadillac's Deville line. By the early '90s, the Fleetwood name was assigned to the newly redesigned rear-wheel drive D-body.
