...........................RESEARCHES...........THE CROWN STAFFORDSHIRE CHINA CO. LTD......

The Crown Staffordshire China Co. Ltd. of England was a manufacturer of quality porcelain dinnerware and figurines for 172 years. Their porcelain and china are highly regarded by collectors today.  Known for their animal, bird, and floral figurines, they also produced these designs on porcelain and fine china dinnerware.  They were especially known for their blue powders used on their tea sets, tea cups and saucers.

The Crown Staffordshire mark and name ceased to be used after 1985 making their products even more valuable to collectors.

Historical Timeline:

1833:   Thomas Green, son of Thomas Green of the Churchyard Works in Burslem (1801), purchases the Minerva Works factory in Fenton.  The company porcelain and china are manufactured here until 1985.

1889-1948:  The company is named the Crown Staffordshire & Porcelain Company.

1948:  The company begins producing only china.  The company name is changed to Crown Staffordshire China Co. Ltd.

1952:  The company was the largest manufacturer of china in the Potteries area of England and employed as many as 200 craftsmen in their decorating department.  Three quarters of the total production was exported, much of it to Canada and the United States.

1965:  The founding Green family is no longer involved in the company.

1973:  The company becomes part of the Wedgwood Group.

1985:  The Crown Staffordshire name ceases to be used on china.

1985:  The Wedgwood Group moves Coalport Ltd., which it had acquired, to the Minerva Works.  Coalport Ltd. was then used to mark the china manufactured at the Minerva Works until 2001 when the plant was demolished.  The manufacture of Coalport Ltd. is moved to Wedgwood's factory in Barleston.

There have been over 15oo different potters producing porcelain and china in the region of England where the Minerva Works was located, making the history of some of these companies difficult to trace.  The Crown Staffordshire company was one of the largest producers of quality porcelain and china dinnerware and figurines of its time and their history is quite well documented.

The porcelain and china from the Crown Staffordshire & Porcelain Company and the Crown Staffordshire China Co. Ltd. are still highly valued by collectors and much in demand today.
