CRANBERRY GLASS COLLECTING & IDENTIFYING

HISTORY

Cranberry Glass first appeared in the last half of the 17th Century but was not made in America until the last half of the 19th Century.

The color of Cranberry glass is transparent named for its color, which is made by adding powdered GOLD to molten batches of amber glass which is then is reheated to a low tempeture to develope the Cranberry or Ruby (red) color.

  • BLOWN, MOLD BLOWN OR PRESSED
  • VERY OFTEN DECORATED WITH GOLD OR ENAMEL
  • TRANSPARENT COLOR AND CLARITY

It should be noted that less expensive Cranberry glass was produced by subsituting COPPER for GOLD and can be identified by the BLUISH-PURPLE TINT/COLOR

example of a less expensive reproduction of Cranberry Glass from the 1950's (this piece is still vintage but is a less expensive piece)

color is a light purplish hue/hand painted decoration

REPRODUCTIONS

Reproductions are out there, do not be fooled. You can identify most of these as the pieces are HEAVIER, OFF COLOR (color is not true), and  their LACK OF QUALITY.
