COLLECTING MC COY POTTERY
After reading several Guides that mention Mc Coy Pottery, I decided to write a Guide of my own to assist the new collector in determining the date of production. I would like to address the History of Mc Coy Pottery.
The J. W. Mc Coy Pottery Company was established in Roseville, Ohio in September 1899. The early Mc Coy Company produced both stoneware and some art lines, including ROSEWOOD.
It was in 1911, that three potteries merged thus creating the BRUSH-McCOY Pottery Comany. It was the Brush-McCoy Co. that continued to produce the original McCoy lines and added several additional art lines.
Much of the early pottery is NOT marked!
It was in 1910 that Nelson McCoy and his father, J. W. McCoy, founded the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company. In 1925, the McCoy Family sold their interest in the Brush-McCoy Pottery Company and started to expand and improve the Nelson McCoy Company.
It was this new company that produced stoneware, earthware specialities, and artware. Most of the pottery marked MC COY was made at the Nelson McCoy Company.
My best advise would be to purchase a book on McCoy Pottery to really get you started on collecting McCoy pottery. Afterall, if you are going to collect McCoy Pottery be sure to collect the Real McCoy!
There are fake McCoy's out there (as there is with anything that is collectible) and some sellers who do not know the difference between the dates of production. Know the companies glazing methods and the appearance of their wares.
Being able to date a peice is important!
