COLLECTING COINS: SILVER CONTENT OF USA COINS

I just had to write this guide to help the newbie/novice coin collector in determining the silver content and value of United States coins; after I read another guide that "falsely" avocates and pitches using Kleenex to determine the silver content of coinage.

  1. Buy a guide to United States Coin collecting. A real excellent book is THE OFFICIAL RED BOOK; A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS 2007 (60th Edition) by R.S. YEOMAN and edited by Kenneth Bressett
  2. Read it; cover to cover
  3. Read it again
  4. Study it!
  5. Keep it handy and at the ready for specific coins look-ups and references.
  6. Do your Homework before buying any coinage! Please don't be fooled by simple test like the "Kleenex Test" I have seen touted to determine the silver content of coinage.

This book tells it ALL! This little red book has a wealth of information; use it as your bible/reference book to coin collecting.

The contents of this book covers the entire spectrum of coin collecting and current values of the coins; coin conditions, US Mint marks and so forth plus wonderful explainations of silver content and alloy cladding.

A list of the books indices is as follows:

  • INTRODUCTION
  • PRE-FEDERAL ISSUES
  • FEDERAL ISSUES
  • BULLION
  • UNITED STATES PATTERN PIECES
  • OTHER ISSUES

This excellent little RED BOOK has just about everything you want to know about coins and coin collecting.

After 1964 the US MINTS increased the alloy content of coinage and silver proofs: these alloys consisted of compositions of copper and nickel and bonded to inner core of pure copper.

This book is usually reprinted and updated in September for the forthcoming year.  At this writing this guide to coin collecting 2007 Edition is available.

I have repeated this guide in the form of a book review for The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of United States Coins 2007 (60th Edition) by R.S. Yeoman.

It is my opinion that every coin collector shoud have this little gem in their library to evaluate and educate themselves on U.S. Coins.

Please read All My Reviews & Guides Thank you!
