COLLECTING CINNABAR
Cinnabar is a ware that is made of numerous layers of a heavy meruric sulfide and often referred to as Vermillion, the red hue in which it is most commonly found (brown is also a very desireable hue in Cinnabar). Cinnabar was carved into many different objects, ranging from beautiful boxes, buttons, snuff bottles and vases.

The carvings are highly detailed and depict gardens, animals, figures and latticwork. Pieces are often black lacquered and black lacquered over red or lacquered on the inside in a contrasting color. All aspects of a piece are carved and detailed.
