As more people come to ebay buying and selling jewelry with magickal properties I thought it might be helpful to offer some tips on how to safely collect these pieces.

I worked with a professional collector of occult and magickal items for a few years ~ her collection contained over 2500 pieces at any given time.  She is still collecting now, a woman in her early 80's.  To protect her privacy I refer to her by her first name only in my listings and books, Helen. 

The first things I noticed about Helen's collection is that every single piece is treated with respect.  Every piece has its own story, its own history or herstory, its own charge, as well as the charges from its creator, owners, wearers and even its watchers.

One key tip: think of your energetics as a group of kids when you are creating space and storage for them.  Putting competing energies near each other or in the same space will cause the energies to focus on each other rather then on their own individual energies.

Knowing what a piece is made of can help in deciding how to safekeep it and show it.  Chakra gems and items related to balancing can be kept out in the open throughout your space but be careful not to put them in close proximity to clearing pieces.  In fact clearing pieces should be kept covered even when showing, perhaps in clear glass cases or jars, colored jars work well but will change the look of the item if others are viewing it.

Cotton, silks, velvet, cashmere, glass, and crystal can be used to house all energetic pieces.  If you are using synthetic materials it helps to bolster the comfort to your piece by matching the color vibration to the energy of the piece.  Pinks and lavendars / purples do well for love charms, female fertility energy, spirituals and amulets.  Fairies are prone to greens, yellows, lilac and whites.

Protection pieces can be kept in clear, yellow that is more gold than yellow, silver, grey, and a silvery blue as well as a royal blue.  Healing pieces thrive in white, violet, palest of yellow, some greens ~ you will have to experiment with the greens ~ and clear.

Clearing pieces are ones that are charged with the ability to absorb an overage of charges or unwanted energy.  If you are a collector it is important to have at least one clearing piece so that you can bring the energy to your space back to harmony.

I have a single wand, handmade (I used to sell my handmade wands in NYC at a store called Star Magic), that I use to clear any excited energy from each new piece as I accept it into the collection. I also have a small wand that was gifted to me that remains with the collection as a buffer to any energetic clashing.

When you are taking in an energetic piece, whether it be your first time or the your hundreth time, "odd" things might occur.  From noises to things dropping, tv shutting itself off, lights going off, etc. Usually this is a result of adding or subtracting an energy within the space.  If you again think of these pieces as children, if they are in a new strange place they may be simply checking it out.  If you had four of them and now you have five, maybe one of the elder pieces is showing its seniority. 

If the occurences continue to happen after three days or if you feel uncomfortable with them, use your clearing piece to absorb the extra energy.  You can do this by slowly moving the wand or clearing bar over each piece and sending your intention through the wand.  Command each piece to surrender what it does not need now to fulfill its purpose and thank both the piece and the wand.

If you ever feel threatened by any energy in your home, move it out of your home immediately.  There is never any reason for you to feel anything but safe and nurtured and nourished in your living space.

There are many disciplines that employ the use of charmed pieces, amulets, icons. Often an altar or sacred space is called for but you can just as comfortably allow your energetic pieces to become an integral part of your home.  I have pieces in every room in my house including the greeting hallway.
