If you have used or heard about flat irons or straightening irons, you most likely have heard of the name Chi.  Chi is a brand name introduced by the very popular company Farouk which produce such products as Biosilk and Sunglitz.  Back almost a decade ago, Farouk introduced their ceramic iron with model number GF1001, and the word Chi became synomous with flat irons.  Contrary to popular belief, Chi was not the first ceramic iron to hit the seen but because of the huge presense Farouk had and still has in the professional hair salons around the World, Chi definately became the most popular.  I must point out that this guide is for the Original ceramic iron (model GF1001) and does not reference any of the new irons Farouk Chi has come out with today.

Performance:

If I were to rate this iron today, I would have to give it 3.5 stars out of 5.  I may have rated this iron higher years ago, but you have to consider their were not many irons that competed with the Chi.  Today is a different story.  Just like any popular product, manufacturers and engineers definately have improved upon this tool (flat irons) and now other brand names have sprung up with very respectful irons.  As far as making hair straight and leaving it shiny and silky, the Chi iron does a satifactory job.  If you know a little about the science behind these irons, you will know that heat is a major factor.  It is mainly the heat and the strength of the heater that allows for your hair to stay straight and hair folicles to seal, which gives it a silky shiny look and feel.  The Chi iron is rated at approx. 410 degrees which is the standard heat, however the Chi was not adjustable, meaning it only had a on/off switch.  Today, most irons are variable and can be dialed to the desired temp.

Durabilty:

I feel this is an area that is often over looked, which is the "durability" of products.  I would have to say, after years of being familiar with this product, I would have to rate the durability 3.5 stars out of 5.  Of course, durability is partly dependant upon how well the users treats the iron, but for the most part, I would say the average life span of this iron based on average usage everyday is about 1 to 1.5 years.  Not to say you wouldnt be able to use the iron anymore, but you will definately notice wear and tear.  Simple adjustments can be done such as tightening the hinge screws and proper cleaning of the plates.

Price:

These irons retailed in salons for upwards of $180.00.  A premium price compared to the current price of these irons.  The savvy buyer can spend a little time and search the internet to find a brand new Chi Original ceramic iron for about $55-$75.  It is interesting to wonder how this iron can be purchased at such a cheaper price today versus years ago.  It obviously has to do with the internet and how thinigs are sold on the internet, but I also think it is due to the introduction of newer ceramic irons.

Conclusion:

For a product that in the beginning was labeled a magic wand of sorts, that would magically transform your wavy hair into silky and straight, it has survived many years as being the most popular ceramic iron in the industry.  However nothing has changed with this model.  Even Farouk has come out with newer models.  In my opinion, this iron has rated average at best in performance and durability and at $55, it is not a bad buy.  If i had a choice however, I may look at some other irons that you can buy for a few dollars more, but get newer technology and possibly a better warranty.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Not until a few months ago, I became aware of rip off Chi products.  They are made mainly in China and are complete rip offs.  They are marketed to online sellers at very attractive prices.  So beware.  Its a very shady thing to get involved in.  I have not personally seen these fakes, but I hear they are identical except for the performance and durability.  So close to the packaging and actual iron that even a trusted seller could be fooled.

As always, happy shopping and Buy Brillant!
