A GUIDE TO CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER MOTORCYCLE GEAR

I SELL A GREAT SELECTION OF MOTORCYCLE SADDLES, TOOLBAGS AND CLOTHES. THIS GUIDE WILL HELP YOU GET YEARS OF USE OUT OF YOUR LEATHER GEAR REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU PURCHASED IT. CHECK OUT MY STORE

SADDLEBAGS, TOOLBAGS ETC.

There are two steps: Cleaning then conditioning / waterproofing.

A couple of times a year or when they are covered with dead bugs, whichever comes first. Clean your bags with saddle soap or Murphies Oil soap per the manufacturers directions.

LET THEM DRY COMPLETELY

At this point some people rub in a light coat of mink oil and let it soak in.

Soak them with several applications of silicone waterproofing spray or one coat of Scotchguard. I don't like Armor All. Be sure to treat all seams. With rubber lined bags I treat the outside only. For non-lined gear I spray the inside and outside. Let them dry and buff with a soft cloth.

After a few years the leather may start to show light spots etc. When this happens clean the leather with saddle soap, let them dry. Then coat them with a leather dye. (I use the regular product sold in the shoe section of the local store) Then proceed with the waterproofing step.

LEATHER CLOTHING; JACKETS, GLOVES PANTS

Once or twice a season clean with saddlesoap. Don't soak the leather.

LET THEM DRY

Apply a thin coat of mink oil.

For jackets I follow up with a light coat of silicone spray.

ZIPPERS:

One or twice a season run a candle or piece of paraffin accross the teeth. Remove any loose threads that might get stuck in the teeth.

A FEW MISC HINTS:

When I buy a new set of bags I apply a layer of soft cloth to to back of the bags where they come in contact with my bike. This works kind of like the saddle blanket on your horse to reduce rubs.
Heres how I do it: Buy a couple of yards of flannel, fleece or what ever your prefer. (I use black.) Spray the back of your bags with waterproof craft glue. Lay the cloth onto the glued surface. Let it dry. Cut around the edge with  scissors. Cut out a slot for your bottom tie-down. Spray the cloth with waterproofer of your choice. Make sure the glue Etc. is dry before you install the saddlebags.

Help your bags keep their shape. If your bike is going to be sitting for a while remove heavy tools etc from the saddlebags. light weigh items don't matter. Stuff them with  cloth, newspapers or whatever. For your round toolbag. Find a round plastic bottle the same diameter as the inside of your toolbag. Cut it to lenght, cut a slotted hole that will let you move things in and out of your bag. Insert it in the toolbag. Load your tools.

Storage

Never store your leather wet. Hang it someplace dry before you put it away. Never store your leather in a damp place. Leather will mold and rot. It's a good idea to use a desiccant in the closet where you hang your leather. It is always best to hang your leather instead of folding it and putting it in a drawer or box.Don't store your leather in a plastic bag. Don't store your leather on thin hangers. Here's a thought: Do you remember those little silica Gel bags marked DO NOT EAT that I shipped with your order? Put them in the pockets of your jacket if you are going to store your leather for a while.
