Vintage leather garments and vintage gloves are a hot collectible on eBay.

Steps for caring and preserving them in this guide from Art2Love1

Hi:

We have been collecting leather garments and especially rare leather gloves for years.  We also sold several and were asked some basic questions on caring for these items, so here are some basic tips.  Hope you find the guide helpful, and do rate it for us.  We also have informative guides on collecting Mid Century/Modern objects and on caring for vintage bags, so check these out.

CLEANING YOUR LEATHER ITEMS:

1.Spotting, dryness, foxing and simple age signs are the common problems you may encounter with vintage leather.  The first thing you would want to do is check for all blemishes and clean and condition the leather properly. Not a big job, really.  Best product we found (and you will find others anywhere from your local pharmacy to your saddle shop and shoe shop) is by far HORSEMAN'S ONE-STEP. The product s a convenient, one-step leather cleaning and conditioning cream that contains three cleaning agents. It removes dirt, sweat, and salt, while helping to restore a natural shine. This leather cleaner and conditioner penetrates quickly, leaving no greasy residue. Designed for all leather goods, from equestrian to gloves and garments, we found it to be effective and economical.  You may want to be extra careful with light-coloured leather, such as bone, ivory or white. Use the product sparingly as it may lightly darken the hide.

STORING YOUR LEATHER ITEMS:

1. Vintage gloves and small items should be wrapped in tissue paper and stored in a dry place.  You can also store gloves in in plastic containers with a lid, like the ones you purchase at the dollar stores. You want to make sure the leather remains soft and supple.  Garments should be kept in a dry place, out of direct sunlight, and do not store them in drycleaner plastic bags.  Leather needs to breathe. You should condition your garments at least once every 6 months to keep them in good shape for years to come.  Don't forget to remove old candies, gum and pens from the pockets.  These will disintegrate over time and create a real mess.

Enjoy your vintage leather items and come visit our store!!
