Buying well known domain names on Ebay

Hi, if you are searching Ebay to purchase a domain you should watch out for which domains you decide to buy. I purchased a good Woodland related .org domain and advertised it for 6 months using paid Google Adwords. After six months I received a letter from a lawyer to my home address that they had got from the WHOIS database. The letter explained that their client had registered the .co.uk and .com versions of the domain I had chosen before I did and they demanded that I stop using the domain for my business enterprise and transfer the domain over to them at my cost or they would take further action.

They also demanded that I hand over any advertising materials I owned that included this domain. Luckily I hadn't had any advertising materials printed up but if I had they would have taken possession of these items too.

So after 6 months of paying to get my domain high up on Google a company has, I feel bullied me into giving up my domain, which they now use to advertise their business.

If you see domains related to Twitter, Facebook, Ebay, Wimbledon, Youtube etc stay well away from them unless you are willing to receive a threatening legal letter demanding that you transfer the domain imediately at your cost or they will take you to court.

None of the companies above have threatened me, I have used these as an example. It was another company that I will not name to prevent another legal letter appearing.

If you are looking to start a similar site to Twitter use a name like 'Chatter' that is no way connected. If you want to have a social site like Facebook, call it something totally different like 'mypals' etc.

You've been warned. I've lost a lot of money and time advertising a few domains over the last 6 months for other companies to bully me into transferring them over to their company at my cost.

Now when I register a domain I keep well away from domains that may seem similar to well known companies and I also check to see if it conflicts with a company, business or trademark on the Anewbusiness.co.uk website.

I suggest you do the same.
