One of the most frequent questions that we get is this -- "How do I know what chain to buy for my saw?" That's a good question. There are so many different types and sizes of chain that it can be difficult to identify just which one your saw needs. The purpose of this guide is to educate you on such chain terms as pitch, gauge, and length.
Chain Pitch
The chain pitch is defined as the distance between any three consecutive rivets divided by two. The pitch defines the size of the chain. Saw chain is made in several pitches - 1/4" is the smallest, 3/8" is the most popular. The drive sprocket must be the same pitch as the chain, and so must the nose sprocket in sprocket-nose bars.
Chain Gauge
The chain gauge is defined as the drive link's thickness where it fits into the guide bar groove. The gauge of the chain and the gauge of the guide bar must match. Saw Chain is made in several gauges - such as .050", .063", etc.
Chain Length
The length of your chain is determined by counting the number of drive links.
All three of these factors must be taken into account when purchasing a chain for your saw. Following is a list of the types of chain that we currently stock and sell in our eBay store:
