If you're unable to breastfeed and don't qualify for programs like WIC, you'll soon learn that feeding your baby gets expensive quickly! Manufacturers' coupons and formula checks help some, but are only a drop in the bucket. If you're feeling the budget crunch, I'd urge you to buy formula on eBay- it's safe, it saves you money, and helps other parents, too.

Safety: as long as the package is factory sealed, formula stays fresh for 2 years or so from the date of manufacture. Most sellers list the expiration dates of the formula they're selling so you can be sure your child will use it while it's still good. My son goes through 2 1/2 cans of formula a week, so if I buy 18 cans with an expiration date six months from now, I know it'll still be good. If the expiration dates aren't listed, ask. Likely the seller just forgot- something that's so easy with a baby around!

Price: my son uses Enfamil Enfacare designed for preemies; buying direct from the manufacturer it's $14/ can in cases of 6.  At the grocery store, it's $13.60 a can, but my regular store doesn't carry it, so I have to go out of my way. On eBay, however, I've paid as little as $9.80/ can INCLUDING shipping- it's like getting a free can of formula for every 3 or 4 I buy! If you remember to base your bid on what you can pay MINUS the cost of shipping/ insurance, it's easy to save money.

Helping other families: It's common for babies' formula to get switched during the first year. Some outgrow special conditions (like low birthweight), some develop them (allergies, reflux, etc.). What do you do with all the formula you bought? Sell it on eBay! The forumla I buy is usually being sold by parents who "stocked up" and then got switched. By purchasing from them, I'm helping them take care of their babies as well as my own, and that feels good.

As you can see, buying formula on eBay is good all-around. I encourage you to try it!
