When I checked today, eBay had over 34,000 auction listings for the cycling category- so how do you know what to look for and who to trust?
Here are three pieces of advice I would give any cyclist who is looking to buy components is this-
1) Know exactly what you are looking for.
There is nothing more frustrating that opening the package that you received in the mail, and going to install a component- only to find out that it does not fit, wasn't made for your bicycle, or is not compatible with your other parts. Getting this sort of information can be difficult at times, but mechanically inclined riders that you know, local mechanics and shops, and other online resources can help you to find out the parts that you need.
2) Decide whether you will buy new or used.
Bicycle parts wear out- period. Some bicycle parts are fine to re-use, while others are best discarded and replaced. Be extra careful when purchasing items such as chains, cassettes/freewheels, wheels, & tires USED from sellers on ebay. These parts wear out over time, and in a matter of a year or two can be non-redeemable. Buying new ensures that you will get the full life out of your parts!
3) When you know exactly what you want- shop by feedback, THEN price!
In today's ebay market, it is not enough just to look for the lowest price. You may be in for a surprise when your cycling part is shipped from Hong Kong (and you are in the US), or when nothing at all shows up! Check a seller's feedback before you buy from them. Minimum 99% is something to look for, and Powersellers are always to be preferred- as they have a proven track record of good customer service in high volume. When you find a seller who has good feedback and a competitive price- go for it!
