Theres a wealth of collectable hutch or hutchinson bottles on ebay. Many refer to them as hutch sodas. If you confine your search to that heading, youll miss about 40 percent of the listings. The hutchinson bottles contained many products other than soda.A certain percentage of sellers dont know what the bottle is.One must look at offbeat listing. One thing is for sure, theres no such thing as a crown hutch. The bottle is either a crown closure, or a hutchinson closure, you cant have both. You will see a lot of crown hutch listings on ebay. Check the listing for blobtops.A lot of sellers call hutchinsons a blobtop.Hutchinson forms were used both before and after the year 1900.Therefore search both antique pre1900 and modern bottles. There is no present problem with hutchinson form bottles being faked. Some of the Coca Cola Beidenhorns and Cola Cola generic script hutches have been repoped. These bottles are easy to spot and the seller will usually declare them as reproductions. These bottles also held beer ,so search breweriania under bottles, and hutch in that catagory. Also search blob top under beer bottle. Hutchinsons., like other reusable bottles will usually display some caseware,as well as small nicks and scuffing.Dug examples will have some mineralisation ,ground lines and or scale. All of these conditions can be removed or improved by modern cleaning metods at a reasonable cost.Hutchinson collectors are very liberal with bottle condition for this reason. However, ebay has become a metod for the unscrupulous to dump damaged bottles on the unsuspecting. The word flash as used by some sellers ,is a glorified word for a crack. The words annealing check often times means the bottle has a sugar coated fissure or crack. I f The bottle is noted as haveing a spider--thats a crack. The best tactic is to check the sellers feedback ,ask about any damage issues.Oftentime a seller will provide additional photos.I bought a bottle on ebay once ,it was noted as being well-worn.It was well worn and nicely cracked. The seller would not refund my money and challenged me to give her bad feedback. She got her bad feedbackand I got my retalitory bad feedback from her. That sort of thing takes the fun out of ebay and collecting.Be carefull take your time and enjoy the hobby. A next topic, and it is all important, is bottle color. In collecting bottles of any type color is everything to most collectors.I gleefully paid 780.00 for a Lolly Pop green hutch from Pa. That same hutch in the usual aqua color wouldnt fetch 15.00.Many sellers sell near colors as colors.Ask the seller if his pictures are the true color or the item.Again ask about a return privledge.Everyone sees colors differently that true, but not that differenly.Hutch bottles are commonly are found in aquamarine thats a mixture of green and blue.If a hutch is a tint to the blue side ,youll see them listed as blue aqua or maybe even corn flower blue.If the bottle is a tint or two to the green side, youll see it listed as light green, apple green,or light citron.Just be careful with color. You will pay for it,be sure you get it.Another note on color.Purple or amethyest is POSITIVElY not an asset to your collection. It is common practice these days ,for ebay sellers to zap very common hutch bottles with radiation to turn them a deep purple.Ive seen these bottles pasted off as rare colors. They are not rare at all, they are bastardizations.I could make up a batch of Ruby Red hutches with a can off spray paint, but what would be the point? There are a lot of natural sun colored ,but the deep purple bottles are zapped to enhance their color and they are ,in almost all cases ,not rare.Nukey zap is not a real color, its a silly fanantasy.English hutches,no such a thing, some have a dashing reseblence to our hutch bottle.Look for the name of the english town, ask the seller.English and u k bottle shouldnt be listed with american glass but it is.Can be confusing to the novice, but thats the way ebay does it.You will see a listing that reads ----superb example, would grade near mint except for a four inch crack down one side. What That seller really said,is there anyone out there lame enough to pay us for this worthless piece that we should have tossed .There is absolutely no investment in broken glass, you can quote me on that.Ebay is a treasure trove of super hutchinson bottles hope ive helped .Happy hunting enjoy bidding.Kindest Regards Norman Bleuler aka Arrt11
