I saw that a replica Porsche Convertible D or Roadster popped up on the auction block this morning and it prompted me to write this amended guide to replicars! This model has the sort of grace Porsche had offered in their early years of production.

As the demand increased for open-air cars, propsective buyers found that some open-air cars were just too spartan; enter Porsche's roadster. While it still had the 'bad-boy' look of a speedster, it was more than just a topless p-car cabriolet.

In the replicar world the same holds true today. This seller has (item# 110089399192) gone the extra mile to recreate the elegance that was the roadster of its day. But more than that, short of the small type chosen to present the car, look at the seller's attention to detail in presenting his/her car's features to us.

Unlike some other ads for cars of this ilk, the coachbuilder is listed clearly, the engine builder is listed clearly as is the maker of the transmission, and the prospective buyer is encouraged to contact these folks. No mysteries here!

But it's only a replica, it's not real! Again, look at the details in the photos. While in my other article about replicars I didn't hazard an opinion about which replica car builder builds the best cars, this example of a replicar is heads and shoulders above the common offering we see here on ebay! It may not be real, but it ain't priced at $100K or more either, it just looks like it!

If you are in the market for a replica sports car, look for features that define what is being replicated (not duplicated, this is after all a fully functioning 21st century car). I noted the seat style as well as some other interior appointments reminiscent of my 1960 Porsche Convertible B (my last one like this was the next generation body-style, hence the "B")... Nothing 'Volksie' about this particular replicar; tenax fasteners on the boot, ten slot wheels, not eight slot like most replicas and the actual radio pod w/ period correct speakers, these are all options that make for a distinctive build worthy of note.

The last thing I want to bring up in this follow-up article about buying a replicar is about SB100. This is the future. I wish I had this feature on my speedster almost more than anything now! When a person shops for a replica here on eBay, this is a part of the sale you don't want to take too lightly. Here in California those of us with pan-based cars have time on our side, but with money-hungry, fee-generating legislators and bureaucrats at the helms, this could change over night. This car already has its CA SB100 so that is a real plus to a potential California buyer!

I hope a replica Porsche is in your future and I hope seeing a particularly good one for sale makes your quest easier, even if you don't buy this one I've written about this morning.
