I'll keep this guide brief.  Though it seems ironic that there needs to be a guide written on how to purchase a guide, I have found that not all guides are created equal, and so you should protect yourself from people out to make a quick buck.  When purchasing a guide on eBay be sure to ask things like the following questions of the seller:

  • How long is the guide?
  • Does the guide include diagrams?
  • How many plans does the guide include?
  • What tools will I need to build this snow gun?
  • How does this snowgun compare to those that are available commercially?
  • Do you offer support on the guide's material?
  • How long have you been making snow guns?

If the seller can answer these questions then they are probably doing a service for the community.  As always, be sure to check for negative feedback, and see the circumstances it was written under.

Generally snow guns are divided into three categories:

  • air/water guns
  • combo guns
  • fan guns

Air/water guns should not cost more than $20US. Combo guns (snowguns with more than one nozzle) produce much more snow than typical air/water snowguns, and are much more complex.  These snowguns can cost up to $1000 on websites, look for deals on eBay, many of the same snowguns are available for less than $500. Be advised that Aluminum is the best material to make a snow gun out of, and that galvinized steel pipe should be avoided because it tends to lose strength over time.

If there is only one nozzle on a snow gun, it is going to be very inefficient and you should consider another gun with at least two nozzles, or even better, buy a guide which will instruct you on how you can save money by assembling these fittings yourself.

Safety Tips:

  • When working with snowguns always wear eye protection
  • Never point the nozzle towards any person, or animal.
  • Always using fittings rated for the correct pressure
  • Always read the instructions
  • Always use hoses rated for the correct pressure
  • If unsure about something contact the manufacturer of the product and/or the eBayer you bought it from

Be aware that this guide is offered only as advice, and because of that buyers should do their own research on any product they purchase.  I am not responsible for any damage, loss in any form, or injury that may result directly or indirectly from the use of the information in this guide.
