How do I buy a replacement shift boot for my vehicle?
Many sellers on Ebay offer replacement shift boots for sports cars and other vehicles, some more expensive than others.
Why the big difference in price for what appears to be a similar item?
Many sellers offer what are referred to as universal or one size fits most replacement boots. Many times they do not even tell you that is what they are selling. These are often the least expensive of the boots offered for a particular auto. Often they do not fit correctly and look inferior to a boot that is made to fit your car.
Some sellers offer vinyl replacements. Some offer leather. A couple sellers offer leather, vinyl, and carbon fiber style boots, and therefore have a broader product price range. Read the fine print very carefully to make sure you are getting the material you want.
What do I look for?
First make sure the seller has a good reputation and a solid product line. Make sure they offer the material you want for your vehicle. Most manufacturers shift boots are made from vinyl as original equipment in even their expensive line of cars. Even though your original was vinyl it can usually be upgraded to a leather boot for increased durability and looks.
Also, is the seller offering a boot that looks like your original?
Most manufacturers place top stitched boots in their cars. The top stitching gives the boot a professional finished look and also helps the boot lie better in the console. Be certain to ask, most Ebay sellers DO NOT offer top stitched boots. They can sell them cheaper that way. So, it may fit but it will not look like your original. Some sellers make their boots from fewer panels than the original boot. As an example, Dodge Stealth and Mitsubishi 3000gt's have top stitched boots made from 4 panels. Most sellers DO NOT top stitch these models. It requires more work, time, and precision. Anyone can sew a hidden seam. Top stitched seams done correctly add greatly to the appearance. Done poorly it shows the lack of quality that seller produces. Also some sellers change the style to 2 panels. They may fit, but they will not look original. One seller claims top stitching will cause your boot to need to be replaced more quickly. They claim the seams are the first thing to show wear. Why are ALL top end cars seams top stitched then? It has nothing to do with wear. The fact is top stitched boots look better, lay in place better, and is what your original looked like. If they can't sew a straight seam they shouldn't try to pass it off as being inferior when it is not. Again, ask before buying! You do get what you pay for.
