Before you purchase a "used autoclave on E-Bay or anywhere for that matter make sure you understand the fine print in the add. Most auctions for "used" autoclaves we see are mostly sold "As Is" there is no warranty and No Return. If you are comfortable with this then by all means go ahead and make the purchase. Other descriptions go on to say guaranteed not to be D.O.A.. A further explanation of this is we plugged it in and it powered up. (thats the extent of testing) So, the guaranty is worthless because they know it will power up. Others go on from here to say that it was taken out of a working environment. Ok- what does that really mean. Why was it taken out of service? They were upgrading their equipment. OK- again we ask why? Was this unit actually working or were the people around it working? We find that problems are discovered and that instead of repairing the units the Doc's simply replace. There are several reasons for this.
1). Your office needs a good working autoclave- without your office is close to patients or you are renting a loaner.
2) Some Companies charge so much for repairs that replacement is a better option
3) The Office may have already spent what they thought was too much money keeping the autoclave running and gave up on it.
4) basic Rule of Thumb for Repair/ Replace -generally if the repair costs more than 50% of replacement valve + age of unit.
5) Most heavy use offices ie. Dental especially usually wear out these units pretty fast say in under 10 years.
Buying a "used" autoclave is hit or miss at best. Buying from a company like ours BaySide Technical Services will ensure that you get the best possible autoclave for your money. Buying from a guy who sells surplus is not always your best bet. For example- the following Tuttnauer autoclave is from 1988/1999 and was recently selling for $1000.00. This unit is probably in pretty good shape going out the door but it is almost 20 years old. At this age one has to wonder what shape the chamber is in after being heated and cooled to 273 degrees. The metal does fail after time in these chambers. Also, what shape are the heaters in? Have they been replaced? if so how many times.
This unit is from 1991 Similar units (1730M) have sold recently on E-Bay between $275.00 and $1000.00. Thats a lot of money for a 16 year old autoclave. One of them said in the description "unit looks as if it may have been reconditioned in the past 5 years" How can they qualify that statement? it sounds as if it is pure speculation and subjective at best.- We have plenty of Brand New Tuttnauer ValueKlave 1730s in our E-Bay Store. The ValueKlave is the only 7" Chamber currently offered by Tuttnauer. The little known secret in the ValueKlave are the more expensive heavy duty heaters that heat this unit fast (similar to having a 220V unit but on 110V). These heaters were not offered on the 1730M.
Basically, if your in the market place read everything. don't get caught like the guy a couple weeks ago that won a $900.00 electronic unit and did not read the line stating that the unit did not power up. He refused to take the unit which has been re-listed and I beleive re-sold.Hopefully, it is just something small. But still you spend good money on a machine it should work.
The purpose of this blog is not to say everyone or anyone in particular is bad. Our goal is to educate you the Buyer on how to look at and judge these items for yourself. After all if you were given the task of purchasing an autoclave for the first time and know little if anything about them it can be a bit intimidating. Even a knowledgeable person can miss a phrase like "unit does not power on " or "no trays included". It happens to the best of us.
We here at BaySide Technical Services are here to help you and answer any of your questions or concerns. Our people are factory trained technicians not salesman. We will make sure you get into the right autoclave to suit your needs.
