Buying a western saddle can be quite an experience. Many ebay buyer are disappointed in their saddle purchases. If you shop price alone, you may get exactly what you pay for. There are certainly some good deals on ebay, but dont expect to get a $1,000.00 saddle for $99.00.
If you are buying a new saddle you can expect to pay from $600.00 to $2,000.00 for a good quality saddle. Spending less than that may get you a poorly made or imported saddle. There are certainly some good values in imported saddle, but make sure you know what you are buying and who you are buying from. There are many variations of quality. If you want a low priced import, expect to spend $125.00 to $250.00. In the $250.00 to $350.00 you can expect a low to medium quality American made saddle. A good quality American made western saddle reqires 20 to 50 house of labor to produce. In addition, the leather and fitting need to be purchased. If you use a little common sense, you can see its impossible to get a good quality saddle for $139.00. We produce our own saddles and use almost a side of leather to produce 1 saddle. Even the best quality leather has some flaw that cause a lot of the "side" to be unusable.
We recommend either a fiberglass covered tree or a bull hide covered wood tree. Bull hide tree are "time tested" for durability. The old time vintage saddles that are still in use, used the bull hide or raw hide covered tree. They are strong and durable and provide years of use.....even everyday ranch use. These trees are also repairable.
If youre not ready to spend at least $600.00 for a saddle you may want to consider a closeout or synthetic saddle. You can find some great closeouts on ebay. There are also some very nice quality synthetic saddles. Synthetic saddles offer light weight and lower manufacturing costs. You can buy good quality synthetic saddles for less than $300.00 to $400.00.
Above all, make sure you are buying from a reliable seller.....Check their feedback.
