Just with any purchase, buying a raised dog feeder can be a confusing task. Not only are there a multitude of choices and designs - wood, metal, plastic, and many others, but finding just the right size can be overwhelming at times. The reason(s) for buying a raised feeder for your pet are numerous, and that's for another article. This guide explains how to purchase the proper height feeder for your pet with an easy to use illustration.

The general rule of thumb for larger breeds of  dogs for feeder height is between 4 to 10 inches below the pet's withers or shoulders. Using the chart below as a guide, simply measure from the floor to the top of the dog's shoulder. After obtaining this measurement, subtract the 4 to 10 inches mentioned above, and this gives you a proper feeder height. Refer to the illustration below and subtract the following amounts:

  • For larger breeds of dogs, subtract 4 to 10 inches
  • For medium breeds subtract 3 to 6 inches
  • For smaller dogs such as toy breeds, subtract 1 to 3 inches

Remember, anything above the floor for eating and drinking purposes is better for your pet. Not only does it aid in your pet's digestion, but it also keeps the little "critters" that are sometimes found crawling on kitchen floors from contaminating, and even eating your pets food. And remember, most elevated feeders don't slide around on the floor like your typical dog bowls do, and they also provide a cleaner feeding area - less mess on the floor.

I hope this guide was helpful if you're considering the purchase of a raised feeder for your pet, and remember to also read my article on the health benefits of elevated feeders.
