When buying a winter horse blanket I would keep in mind wheather indoor or outdor use is intended, the winter climate where it will be used, the denier number and the amount and type of fill.
If the horse is going to be outside at all, buy a turnout (waterproof).
If the rug is going to be used in the mid-states, 450 grams of poly fill will be able to keep your horse warm. But, if it will be worn in the M&M States or Canada, one will want to insist on a blanket with 500 grams of poly fill and having 2000 denier.
If you don't want the blanket to fall apart the first month, spend the extra $ now and select one of nylon with no less than 1600 denier -- you'll be dollars ahead down the road.
Happy trails,
