Buying Your First Surfboard - Surfboard Buying Guide
When it comes to buying your first surfboard there are a number of considerations to keep in mind. There are two man types of board: longboards and shortboards. Each of these models offers something different to the rider. Beginner surfers are free to use either type of board, but the longer and larger ones are generally considered to be easier to use.
Longboards typically measure at least eight and a half feet in length. Their larger size makes them slower in the water but far more stable. Maneuvering is not as rapid but their longer length usually makes it easier for riders to catch waves. As such, beginning surfers usually start with a longboard to learn the basics, graduating to the shortboard once they feel comfortable on the water.
Shortboards are about speed and maneuverability. Since they are smaller and lighter, they glide faster over the water and allow for fast cuts and turns. At the same time, their lighter structure makes them easier to fall off or "wipeout." For beginners who don't want to sacrifice too much speed, there is a middle ground: the "funboard." Not as lengthy as a longboard, they nevertheless retain good buoyancy, allowing for a faster and stable ride.
Learning to surf with a longboard may bring about a few complications. Although the longer board makes it easier to "catch" a wave, its heavy and bulky size can make it difficult to paddle out to the actual wave. The "right" board is the one that meets your needs and often depends on your height, weight, and ability. At eBay.com, rookie and veteran surfers alike can find a wide range of surfboards.
