Buying Vintage audio on ebay is a great way to purchase a nice piece of audio at a reasonable price. Now for the BUT, BUT if you don't know how to buy, what to buy and what to look out for you can spend a lot of money and end up with JUNK! The first thing to do is to know how much you want to spend and remember to include the shipping costs in your budget. Second you must know what you want AND what a reasonable price for the item will be. Third is you must know up front if the unit will require servicing to bring it up to the performance level you expect.
As for your budget, expect $25-35 for shipping costs for a typical receiver. ASK about shipping costs and packing. PAY for good packing (bubble wrap or double boxing). You don't want to buy a nice vintage receiver and have it damaged in shipping.
Deciding what you want should be determined by the support for the product available. If you can't get a service manual for the item DON'T buy it, as you will have great difficulty in repair in the future. Locate a source for the manuals before bidding.
Ask lots of question about how the unit functions, STAY AWAY from "powers on but untested units" unless you are an electronics technician or you will be in for an expensive surprise! Almost all of the units I have purchased as "untested" required extensive repairs. Which is why they were "untested"!!!!! It sells easier as "untested" than "DOES NOT WORK".
Returning that bargain $30.00 receiver to get your money back is a lost cause if it costs you as much to return it as you paid for the item.
PAY for quality, appearance and a warrantee. Check the sellers feedback and read the buyers comments before bidding........Happy Hunting, John
