The first thing to do is to READ & STUDY, about all Types of Gemstones, The more you know the better you will be able to Purchase Rough Material at affordable prices.
We have a large store on eBay and about 1/2 of the stones I sell I purchase directly from the Tucson Gem & Jewellery Shows. Its also a great place to get contacts for Gem Dealers from other Countries. where I purchase the other half of my inventory. I have found when buying Rough Gemstones its far better to pay top price and get a top Gem Material
Ask yourself one question ? Would you rather have one Great Stone or a pile of worthless Junk. Thats why I pay more than most Dealers.
You can pay less but you will have a much harder time Faceting & Selling your Gemstone.
The Best Way to Buy, in my opinion.
1. Learn
2. Buy Stones with lots of Great Color, Stones Can be To Dark or To Light, As a Rule its best if the stone is a Bright Medium Dark. ( Except for Natural Light Color Stones like Aquamarine ) But vivid Color is very important. When Selling on Ebay Good Pictures are very important and Stones with Strong Color will be much easier to great pictures, light color stones are difficult.
3. Try to Buy Rough Stones that are at least 5ct in Size, Keeping in mind the average yield on a Faceted Cut Gemstone will be about 30% the size of your rough,
Buying, Single Stones are expensive even for dealers, Try to buy larger Quanities, The prices are much better the more you buy, at Gem Shows " Cash Talks " best with dealers from overseas,
Just above a Very Unusual Chivor Emerald Crystal. VVS quality and di-hexagonal ~ 12 sided
And also look for the Shape of the rough, They can be to thin or odd shaped for producing a nice gemstone, I like nice Round or Plump Ones !!!
4. Clarity, Try to purchase the Cleanest stones available, You have to be Very Careful here, Look for Fractures within the stone, or other Types of Inclusions that will lower its Value.
Lower grade stones are mostly junk and Gem Cutters will be unable to Cut Them properly.
5. The best way to Buy is to SEE them in person, Go to Gem Shows in your Local Area, Most larger cities will have gem shows once or twice a year.
6. Deal with Natural Stones that have not been Heated or Treated in anyway, Treated stones have a much lower Value.

Grading; Did you know that some stones can be AAA Graded and still be close to junk, Just because a dealer buys a parcel of AAA graded stones does not mean all of them will be AAA, Its been my experience that many will only be A or AA grade. Currently I am considering updating my grading for my Pink Opal And Uvarovite Garnets, They are far superior stones and don't fall into the AAA Grade, They are Much Better, There are no set ways to grade them.
