With the up-swing in Nascar's popularity, you may be considering getting started in collecting Nascar die cast.  As with most sports collectibles the market is saturated with both authentic and "knock-off" or copy cat items, used or "vintage" pieces, and new products coming out almost daily.  This guide is intended to help you make smart buying decisions when purchasing die cast collectibles online.

In the Ebay and online market place, you are at a slight disadvantage when shopping for collectible items.  Misrepresentation can be a factor in making a great "bargain" purchase, or paying a little more for a quality item.  Die cast, like sport cards and other memorabilia.. can be placed into "graded" categories.  Mint, near mint, excellent, very good, good, fair and poor.  Grading in this way is subject to the seller's interpretation, and as a buyer, you should ask questions and "beware".  A mint quality piece should be free from the dust that displaying uncovered collects, the hood and truck on pieces that open should close properly and be flush with the body of the model, all paint, printing, decals should be free from scratches and wear.  Tires on a mint model should be clean and move freely, and finally the packaging should be in like new condition -- free of shelf wear, tears, and soiling.  Also, be aware that many die cast models contain a certificate of authenticity - models from Revell, RCCA, and Team Caliber should most often include this certificate.

Autographed items should be bought with the most care.  The ease in which someone can replicate a signature with a Sharpie, makes these pieces the simplest to manufacture.  Always check for an original COA (Certificate of Authenticity) from the manufacturer.  Proper documentation ensures that your autograph will add, not detract from the items worth.

Lastly, ask the seller.. don't be hesitant in questioning an item's condition.  Be specific in with your questions, don't be afraid to ask for documentation for autographs, request more photo's if you are unsure of an items condition.  And, most importantly, buy what you love.. the worth of any item is magnified by the owner's desire to have it!
