Buying Jewelry for Dolls 18" - 22" Dolls' Wrist Sizes

After stepping into the nightmare that is dolls' wrist sizes, I found that they vary more widely than I had at first supposed, resulting in my designing bracelets of different sizes not only specificially for each general size -- 11-1/2" - 12" 1:6 scale dolls, 14" - 16" 1:4 scale dolls, and 18" - 22" 1:3 scale dolls -- but for different dolls within that general size.

Here are the measurements of my 1:3 scale dolls' wrists are and what I have learned*:

  • 18" Girl Dolls:
    • Magic Attic:                               2-3/8" wrist =    2-3/4" charm bracelet
    • Battat (Our Generation)
      • newer dolls:                        3" wrist =           3-1/4" charm bracelet
      • older dolls:                          2-3/4" wrist =    3" charm bracelet
    • Madame Alexander
      • Sweet and Chic**:             3" wrist =           3-1/4" charm bracelet
      • Girlz**:                              3-1/8" wrist =     3-3/8" charm bracelet
    • American Girl:                           3-1/2" wrist =     4" charm bracelet*
  • 22" BJDs:
    • Angel of Dream:                        1-7/8" wrist =     2-1/8" - 2-1/4" charm bracelet
    • Volks Dollfie Dream:                1-13/16" wrist = 2-1/8" - 2-1/4" charm bracelet

Another factor to take into consideration is the width of the hand: charm bracelets are designed to be worn larger than the wrist and sliding down over the metacarpal bones (the group of small bones below the wrist and before the "hand bones"), without sliding down below the top of the top, longest, bone of the thumb; for that reason, the maximum size of the bracelet must not be larger than the measurement around the top part of the hand.

* size huge: the American Girl Doll is thick everywhere; the Battat Dolls are basically the same in body measurements (both are known as 18" chubby body, as opposed to the 18" slim body [Magic Attic, Gotz, Euro Girls]); however, note that their wrist sizes are substantially different.  A larger bracelet can generally be fastened to be smaller, while a smaller one may not always have extra links to be fastened for a larger wrist, which also results in a gap in the charms (see further note below)

** Gorgeous dolls -- hands very delicate and expressive; great hip jointing allowing for a variety of foot placement both sitting and standing.

btw, the one person who found this not to be helpful was an American Girl fan who took issue with my placing them in the "size huge" category and mentioning obesity as a childhood problem we did not have in the past.  She found a 36" waist on a 4'6" (54") ten-year-old to be "normal."

It was those dolls specifically that made me see the need for a little more tailoring of individual sizes within a general size range than we ordinarily consider, so I decided to post the measurements to help people with the large child-body dolls know whether or not an accessory would be interchangeable, and likewise, to help bjd owners know whether or not the adult-bodied 22" dolls could wear one listed as AG. 'nuff said.

The doll bracelets specifically referred to here as examples are carefully made for individual dolls, rather than a one-size-fits-all: an even spacing of the charms makes a bracelet hang better. One-size-fits-all would require a longer extension chain , which would result in a gap in the charms.

About the examples:

Individualized tailoring, or fit, differentiates couture from OTR, or RTW, which is the reason ready-made costs less to make and to buy and the reason that couture is costly to make and to buy.  It is more time-consuming to design items with individual fit than to design a one-size-fits all, as the assembly-line factor in ready-made standardized items cuts costs by cutting time -- the wonderful invention/development by Henry Ford which made the United States/Detroit the world leader in automobile, then airplane, production, and France the world leader in Haute Couture.

Each of these is different, as individual choices are made fitting charms to the chain foundations, which also vary, and each has TLC and lots of luck worked into it.

above: Magic Attic;

below: Battat Our Generation (note that this bracelet has an extension chain. While the primary use of the extension chain is to give the user something to grasp while clasping the bracelet,  it may also be used to adjust for larger wrists, up to 1/2" larger, as it is the same chain as that in the bracelet and also has a simple charm at its end, which serves as a charm to balance the whole if the extra links are used to expand the size, though its functional purpose is as something to grip while fastening the bracelet on the doll).

Armed with this information,  you can make an informed decision about buying bracelets for dolls that may not be on this list simply by measuring her wrist and hand and comparing it to the measurements given in a listing.  Use the wrist measurement as a guide for cuff bracelets and take into consideration the hand size when buying a bracelet that must also slip over the hand to be put onto a doll . . . as well as a guide for bracelets such as these, which fasten with a clamp fastener and are designed to be worn loose without slipping down over the hand and off.

Hopefully also the guide will help in evaluating the quality of doll jewelry you come across (I've gotten stuck with silvertone plastic beads a couple of times and have given them away: I like my dolls to feel "real" to me and to themselves.
