Purchasing a Domain Name can be a tricky business, one that must be carefully thought out, and the impact weighed.

Firstly, a Domain Name is nothing more than an address to a particular website.  The concept of Domain Names was created for us Humans.  Without such Domain Names, we could not type 'www.ebay.com' into the address bar of our browser.  Instead we would have to remember a string of numbers, called and IP Address, or Internet Protocol Address.  An IP address is a string of numbers that points to a web server containing the web page's information that we want.  For example:  '127.69.51.31' is an IP Address.  Now I ask you, who could remember a string of numbers like that, or two strings of numbers?  Think about how many Domain Names you can think of off the top of your head, and now think about how difficult it would be to remember those web sites' IP Address'.  Impossible, right.  That's why the Domain Name was developed.

Ok, now we've got some background, lets begin by talking about the different types of Domain Names available.  We'll start by talking about the extention.  Today there are several extentions available.  By extention I mean the part of the Domain Name the follows the period (i.e. www.ebay.com  has a .com extention commonly reffered to as dot com). There are also many other extentions available, .net, .org, .edu, .ws, .us, .mil, .pro, .tv, .info..and you get the idea.

It's important for your Domain Name to have a Top Level Domain or TLD.  The current TLD's are .com, .net, and .org.  Anything else, besides one of these TLD extentions could cause some problems when people are looking for your website.  Think of your favorite brand name website. It has a .com extention doesn't it?

Stick with the TLD extention when you're buying or renting a Domain Name.  Your customers will appreciate it, and you will surely see more web traffic coming your way.

If you're going to spend good money buying a Domain Name...it's worth your return on investment to select only the finest available.

Thanks,
