        • Whether you have a mini horse, draft, or light horse you need to buy a Quality harness that will stand up to the rigors of use. There are two basic harness materials in use; leather and synthetic. In choosing a leather harness look for brand names like Freedman, Smuckers and Quality S which is a less expensive but a good using harness made by Smuckers. There are a number of other makers who also make high quality durable harness from heavy leather. Do not take the sellers word that this is a Quality harness or a show harness. Do not assume that a harness toughted as Amish Quality is just that as there are many craftsmen making harness of lower quality that is Amish made. Examine the pictures and go to the Manufacturer's Web site and look at the photos that are listed there. A good sturdy harness should be made with thick leather and have close stitching and sewn in hardware, not riveted in buckles and dee rings. If you want easy to maintain synthetic harness Zilco is top of the line for beauty, durability and easy care. Walsh is another maker who has a range of harness for light and heavy duty which holds up well to use and is easy to clean up with a wet rag. Be very wary of new harness which is at a bargain price. In all things you generally get what you pay for. A top of the line leather or synthetic, Beta Biothane, or Nylon, harness can cost $800 or more. Expect to pay $250 or more for a good quality training harness for a mini or pony and, of course, the bigger the animal the more costly will be the harness for that size. Also, consider the way the harness ties to your vehicle. Do you want a quick-hitch harness? If you do, be sure your vehicle has the quick-hitch receiver on it or that it's possible for one  be installed.  Harness is expensive to ship $30 to $50 for horse size so, if you have to return it you will have to pay return shipping as well as losing your origional shipping cost in the return process.Lastly, do not buy anything made in India, the leather is of very weak inferior quality and you and your horse could lose your lives WHEN this poor quality material fails. If there is no maker listed email the seller and ask who the manufacturer is and what kind of leather was used and if it is American Harness leather. Good Luck and safe driving.
