Quite frequently I see listings for Bernina software products on eBay and and other online sources. There are a couple of serious pitfalls to be aware of if contemplating this kind of item.
First of all; some software products, such as Cds and memory cards that simply contain libraries of patterns, will work fine in machines and readers that contain the correct underlying programming to read and process the patterns. However, unless your sewing machine, computer, or reader is designed to accept and read these products, then you have just bought something that is completely useless. The advice; read your owners manual that came with your machine to see which products are compatible. Seems fundamental, but many people do not do it and wind up wasting their money, or having to try and foist that product off on some other unsuspecting buyer.
Secondly; most Bernina software programs require a key or code, which is supplied by Bernina through an authorized dealer, in order to work. By software, here I am referring to the underlying programming, such as EC on PC, or something similar. These product are very expensive, and it's tempting to bite when they are seen listed somewhere online for many hundreds of dollars less than retail. Again, if one yields to the all-too-human impulse to look for a bargain, you may be left with something that is worse than useless. And guess what....your local Bernina dealer isn't going to be too helpful in trying to aquire those codes, and who can blame them? Some sellers will assure you that the product worked on their computer, and they can supply you with the same codes that came with the software originally. Guess what again.....if that software was installed and registered once, then Bernina knows it and will block it from being activated again. Read the license. Software is for the original purchaser only, and is not transferable. Believe me, Bernina keeps up with it.
99% of the sellers I'm familiar with do not accept returns of electronic items or software under any circumstances.
My best advice; buy electronic machines and software from your local authorized dealer if at all possible. You will be supporting a local business, usually lessons are available, there is a valid warranty, and your money will be well-spent.
