The advent of online shopping has literally put the whole world at our fingertips.  There are many things to consider when purchasing  dance shoes and ballet slippers online that are not neccessary to think about in a traditional brick and mortar store.

SIZING

  • All dance shoes are NOT created equal.  Even within the same brand and shoe type, sizing varies.  Most sellers will note if the shoes run differently than street size.  Ask  for measurements if you're unsure.
  • Check the category and read the description thoroughly.  A size 10 shoe could be a Womens, Mens or Child size shoe.   If the sizing is Unisex, there should be instructions on what size to order by gender.
  • International Purchases-  Be sure the shoes you are buying are the correct size for you in your country's sizing.  Many online stores sell internationally and provide sizing using their own country's system.  You can find a link to an online shoe size converter on my About Me  page.

MATERIALS & FIT

Dance shoes are available in leather, vinyl, and fabric or some combination of the three.  A breathable shoe will be the most comfortable.  Look for leather, natural fibers, or mesh.  Avoid an all vinyl or faux leather shoe as it is not breathable.

Split sole or full sole?  A split sole shoe has the sole material at the ball of your foot and at the heel with a flexible area in between.  A full sole covers the entire bottom of the shoe.  The split sole offers much more flexiblilty for dancing.

Split Sole                               Full Sole

Shoes should fit snugly, hugging your foot.  A loose shoe is difficult to dance in.

Be proactive when shoe shopping online.  Since you can not try them on, be sure you have as much information as possible beforehand to insure proper sizing.  Read descriptions thoroughly and ask for measurements in inches or centimeters and compare them to your foot size if neccessary.  Remember there are size variations even within the same brand.

Follow these guidelines and you'll soon find yourself Dancing (in comfort) in the Streets!
