I have bought many PSP's on Ebay, refurbished PSP's, and resold PSP's on Ebay. So I will give you the aspects of all sides of the issue.
The Three ways you can get the best PSP for the money on E-bay: I will give you the heads up on all of the inside information many sellers or Sony will not tell you about. How to making good purchasing decisicions on Ebay and how it will save you from alot of headaches later.
1st Way: "Buying a New/Sealed PSP on Ebay"
1. First off you will probably pay slightly more than retail on Ebay due to the fact the seller has to make a profit. To cover for all of the Ebay listing and final price seller fee's.
2. Just because many PSP's are listed as "NEW" and/or have "New" in the title does not necessarly mean that it is such. Many sellers use this deception to make you spend more on their in fact used PSP.
3. Sony's Warrenty: As long as you can see the two stickers that are placed behind the battery install location on a PSP, then yes you are covered by the Sony warrenty. You can buy the PSP from anyone As long you you have proof that the PSP has not been tampered with Sony will grant you the warrenty. For the picture of the two stickers, search Ebay for the Guide: "Before You Buy a PSP Read This" A must see before buying one.
4. Warrenty's worth: A phone call to Sony and they will assess the amount it will cost to fix the PSP before you send it to them. What it will actually cost; It will probably cost at least $60-$90 or more for the "Repair." What you get; A refurbished or repaired PSP that was in worse cosmetic condition you probably sent your other one in.
2nd way: "Buying a Used PSP on Ebay"
1. If you see the words "As Is" anywhere in the listing, the seller is not responsible for having the item returned, exchanged, or having any gaurantee whatsolever the Sale is "Final." If you do return the item to the seller, they are protected by Law to report you for fraud. Saying that you did not see the words in the listing will be no exuse for the seller to do anything to help you. Many sellers use this technic to sell their damaged PSP's as a used one instead of selling it as, Parts, Malfunctioning, Damaged, AS IS etc.. PSP.
2. Be wary of the details (if they Have them): If a seller says that the PSP has scratches or cracks make sure to ask how many their are and how deep. Sometimes seller's like to make the PSP sound like it is slightly damaged, when in fact the small scrachs is blur the screen, or the crack is such is that it messes up the whole PSP. Also if the seller does not give you any details about the PSP, ask them about it. If they do not list any details or refuse in any way to tell you about their PSP, they are probably out for their quick buck more than your PSP troubles down the road.
3. No photo/Stock Photo PSP's: Without actually seeing the PSP you cannot grasp what the unit looks like or perceive the wear it has gone through. You could be the lucky one and get exactly what they described in the listing, but don't count on it. Some of these are in worse condition than even the broken and As Is listed PSP's.
4. Refurbished PSP's sold as "Used": Make sure to look at the old feeback of the seller, if they consistantly sell PSP's as used they are probably selling refurbished PSP's. Also if you suspect your used PSP was refurbished See "Before You Buy A PSP Read This" Guide on Ebay.
3rd Way "Buying a Refurbished PSP on Ebay"
1. Refurbished?: You are essentially buying a repaired PSP. These are typically the cheapest PSP's you will come accross on Ebay. Also just because it is repaired doesn't mean the PSP doesn't have any problems. Their are many Refurbished PSP's that will have loud ringing noises when turned on, trouble booting and turning off the PSP, half working PSP's with modified firmware, etc.
2. Cheap!: These are the cheapest because they were bought cheap and are resold cheap. Simple buying and selling priciples. But just be aware you get what you pay for.
3. Returns?: Also just to keep in mind that many refurbished PSP's are store returns and damaged PSP's bought off Ebay. Many of these PSP's have been through lots of abuse and sometimes that abuse is unrepairable. Just because the problem was fixed before on the PSP doesn't mean it won't have the same problem down the road.
4. More Rotation? : Refurbished PSP's are never ONE owner PSP's. Many of these PSP's have been sold and resold on Ebay so many times that some sellers actually mark components inside the PSP's just to keep track of the ones they've already sold. Also a big red flag is that some of these PSP's do not have manufacturer #'s on them, whether purposely rubbed off, or their is not a PSP sticker on it period, so it makes them almost imposible to trace. Pretty shady business if you ask me.
I hope this guide will help you in deciding on the PSP you want to buy on Ebay! So you don't have to make the same bad decisions I have made in the past.
