Gold leaf is gold that is made into very very thin sheets(around 0.2 - 0.4 micron thick). This this sheets mostly uses for gilding in craft products, and painting. In eastern countries also use it in religion. If you have been to South-East Asia and have visited a temple you can see many Buddha statues which were decorated by gold sheets. 90% of gold leaf seller on eBay are from Thailand. Gold leaf in Thailand is a religion product. We use it to decorate the Buddha statues. However some artists in Thailand use it for crafts and picture frames. In the market in Thailand, we have different quality of gold leaf(22k - 24k gold) and also mimic or imitate gold leaf(someone called it "science gold") which is much cheaper and it doesn't contain any real gold.When you are buying gold leaf on eBay please consider
1. Is that real or mimic gold leaf?BEWARE! some sellers sell you mimic gold but they advertise it is real gold.
Real gold leaf will slowly seep after you rubbed it with your finger and finally disappear from your hand
but the mimic gold leaf is doesn't.
2. Selected gold leaf and unselected gold leaf
A quality gold leaf must be one full big sheet on the paper(selected gold leaf) not small sheets of gold leaf put together on paper which is cheaper.
Some seller may sell you unselected gold leaf or sell you a pack of mix gold leaf(selected + unselected)
Thai Government has never ever given any approved or certificate
to any gold leaf products.
The stamps those you see on the paper cover is just the trademark or logo of product.
