The Chandler/Butler Tube Driver can be a misunderstood "brand" that cannot be classified into "vintage" and "reissue".
Here's what BK Butler himself has said: "There is no Chandler Tube Driver. Never was a Chandler Tube Driver. They just marketed it for a while."
From the Butler Audio Website: The design and sound is the same as the original (as supplied to Eric Johnson, David Gilmour, etc) but with improved parts such as Switchcraft all metal jacks, click pots, etc. Each unit is hand built to my specs and I personally check out each Tube Driver to perfection. Then I engrave my signature on the bottom of the case. This insures authenticity now and in the future!
It is not analogous to a vintage Ibanez TS808 and a reissue Ibanez TS808 for example. Those who are familiar with tube screamers know that the reissues definitely do not sound as good as the originals. That is not the case with the Butler Tube Driver. As stated above, BK Butler always produced his Tube Driver and is once again producing his Tube Driver; same sound, better parts.
Here's what BK Butler said about two of the more famous Tube Driver users, David Gilmour and Eric Johnson:
"The David Gilmour pedals are stock as originally designed. I just sent off 4 new innards to upgrade his older pedals last month (Dec '05). Eric has some original Tube Drivers that I added an extra Bias pot on the rear above the jacks to allow adjustment of the 'stiffness' and saturation of the tube. I think I made 3 or 4 of them for him."
Again, it's not "vintage vs. reissue". BK Butler made them then and he makes them now. Even David Gilmour upgraded his older units for the new stuff.
If you're looking to save a few bucks then you might consider buying an older Tube Driver, (though older units are selling for upwards of $300 and new ones are selling directly from BK Butler for $300). But if all you're looking for is "vintage vibe", don't fall for "Why buy the reissue when you can buy the original."
Instead, ask yourself: "Why buy something old and used just because you think it has "vintage vibe" when you can buy a new 'original' directly from the original designer and builder, who builds it by hand for you and then gives you a three year warranty."
