Famous Bukhara Rugs as they are known in the West have always been made by Turkmen people despite the fact that Bukhara is a name of a Uzbekistan landmark city. Long ago both current Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were part of the same Khiva Khanate and later Turkestan republic. The rugs made by Turkmen tribes were sold in Bukhara, which at that time was a huge caravan stop and marketplace on the Silk Road (a trading route connecting Europe and Asia). That is where the name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs, specifically, to Turkmen rugs made by Tekke tribe distinctive for their geometric design and bright cranberry-red palette. Today, Tekke and other Turkmen designs like Yomud, Ersari and Beshir are widely replicated in Pakistan and Afghanistan to fit the taste of the masses. In my opinion however, if you truly want to experience the warmth and silkiness of the real Turkmen lambs wool yarn turned into a vibrant masterpiece, buy rugs handwoven in Turkmenistan.
Check out my auctions for vibrant collectible items brought from Turkmenistan - rugs, national costumes and accessories that were not made as merely a tourist souvenir but crafted exclusively for the person who made them or for their family or a dear friend.
