Over the years there have been several models produced of the famous "Atomic Submarine Of The Future" the impressive "Seaview" from "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea". Each of these kits had various problems from the shape of various sections of the sub's hull, the size and location of parts to items that were never carried by the Seaview or even seen in the series.
All of us wanted a true model of the SSRN Seaview a she appeared in the 2nd - 3rd seasons of Voyage. But now MOBEIUS MODELS has produced a great model of the Seaview as we have always wanted.
(There has been different opinions on how the Seaview was listed from SSN, SSNO, USOS and SSNR. In the orginal movie it was USOS but in the series it was changed to SSRN and was stenciled on various supplys and equipment "SSRN Seaview)
This 39" model makes a great model of the Seaview as she looked during the "Color Episodes" with the "Flying Sub". In building this model you can decide on the two major filiming versions: 8'6" or 18'2".
Here are some tips on building a correct version of the two models as seen in the series.
In building the 18'2" version you use the nose section without the raised frames around the windows and the missle deck section that has 20 missle tube hatches. The radar antenna can be either raised or retracted into the sail. (It was in both positions in the series on surface shots)
You can use small plastic rhinestones in place of the two clear running lights on the front sides of the sail to make the "Red & Green" lights as seen in various scenes of the Seaview.(This can also be done for the 8'2" models running lights) These make nice lights that really show when light is on the model.
In the interior the "Control Room & Observation Nose" look great and can be painted from theguide with the model or you can pick the various season when "New Equipment & Insturments where installed". Another option is to make a set of the "Crash Doors" that sealed off the Observation Nose from the Control Room" or "Collision Screens" that closed over the Bow Viewports. (You can also do these options to the 8'2" model)
In building the 8'2" model you use the nose section with the raised window frames and the missle deck section with 16 missle tubes. The radar antenna was retracted into the sail as this model was seen mainly running submerged.
On painting the models there has been various answers on the colors used. They have ranged from all shades of gray and white colors. The basic color for the Seaview's hull is as follows:
The main hull down to the top of the side bilge keels and stern engine cowling fins is a medium gray. On the supersturcture area along the side starting infront of the forward vent ports all the way to just behind the rear vent ports is a dark gray (This only on the sides not on the deck top). The bottom of the hull to the bottom of the bilge keel and the bottom of the engine cowling fins is a flat white color.
You also can add some shading in various areas around the sonar domes, top of the bow fins and bilge keels next to hull like was done in the series to bring out details and to add weathering as was seen on the models in the series.
And one final tip for the Flying Sub:
The main color is yellow for the body. The correct colors for the fin tips is a dark blue. The same color blue is used on the entire top docking ring outside area and inner recessed area. The top hatch is silver . The bottom docking ring and recessed area is the same as the hull color. The bottom hatch is silver. The window frames are the same color blued as the fin tips and the front panels from the windows to wing/fin tips is silver.
These tips should help you build a great model of the Seaview from "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" as she prowled the ocean's depths.
