So you want to purchase a brass model train, but are a bit leery of such a large purchase on eBay? Here are some tips I have learned through the years for both novice and advanced buyers.

- Check The Photos - A good seller will usually have lots of photos, examine them and look for any problems, paint chips, or signs the model has been dropped. Even a good seller can overlook problems you may spot with an attentive eye!
- Read The Description - You may be saying, you call this advice? Check the photos and read the description?? -- In our experience 95% of buyers who have some sort of problem did not do both of the above. Read the description, and if something seems to be missing ask the seller a question!
- What to Watch For - Check for these things, does the model run well at both high and slow speeds. How is the quality of paint? What is the condition of the engine, is it mint or heavily used. Is the original box included and is it in good shape. Is the foam in the box in good shape. Are the extra parts included, if any originally came with the model?
- Look For a Seller Who Knows The Product - There are many good sellers on eBay who know a lot about brass model trains. In fact many of the most reputable dealers sell on eBay, as well as many of the most prolific collectors. Buying a model from one of these individuals can be a rewarding experience. However, sometimes one with very little knowledge tries to sell a model. This can be a chance for a good deal, or it can be a very poor outcome, bid accordingly! The seller should know answers to issues like we mentioned above. They should also know how to properly pack a brass model or even a great model can end up at your doorstep in very poor shape.
- If It Sounds To Good To Be True... - It usually is! If the model seems to cheap, or if you get a 2nd chance offer on a rare item, be very cautious. Sometimes there are great deals to be had on eBay, but normally the model will sell for a reasonable amount. Sometimes you will need to be prepared to pay a good amount of money for an item you really want.
- Buy It Now! - And not just, with BIN on eBay! Some brass models are very limited, and a similar model may not show up again on eBay for weeks, months, or even years. You can search completed listings to find if similar models have sold recently. Along with a price guide, this can also be a good way to know if you are paying a fair price for the model.
