Have you listened to a Live Radio Compilation CD lately?    The main reason why fans collect these CD's is because they are produced in limited numbers and most importantly, feature EXCLUSIVE and UNIQUE,  LIVE performances in a very intimate setting.   The majority of the performances are "Unplugged", Acoustic performances that are unavailable on any other CD or Studio Release.   The small space of your typical Radio Station studio doesn't lend itself very well to a lot of electric amps and instruments.

There are hundreds of Radio Stations across the country that produce Live Performance Compilation CD's every year.  Almost every collector of Live Radio Compilations consider KFOG in San Francisco, KMTT in Seattle, KGSR in Austin, WXPN in Philadelphia and KCRW in Los Angeles to be the Best Stations in the United States when it comes to Producing Live, In-Studio Compilations.

But did you know that Boston, Massachusetts holds the distinction of releasing more Live Radio Compilation CD's than any other city in the United States?    Boston-area FM Stations WBCN, WXRV, WBMX, WBOS, WAAF, WZLX, and WERS  have collectively released two dozen CD's since 1996!

In my honest opinion, 5 of the 10 best Live Radio Compilation CD's I have heard (I collect these from all over the United States) are from my hometown of Boston!   I would put any of these 5 against anything that KFOG, KMTT, KGSR, WXPN, or KCRW  has to offer & I own almost ALL of the CD's from those stations!   I would recommend these Boston Radio Station Compilation CD's as ESSENTIAL for any collector of Live Radio Compilations CD's:

1. WBMX This is Mix Music Volume 2 -  This was the second in a series of Live Performances CD's released annually by Mix 98.5.  These songs were recorded exclusively for MIX 98 LIVE in their studio and other Boston venues including the now infamous Mix Fest 98 Bare Naked Ladies Concert in Boston City Hall Plaza during the summer of '98 (I was there!) and cannot be heard anywhere else.  

2. WXRV Live From The Music Hall Volume 1 - This is an all acoustic CD produced in 1997.  It features some amazing exclusive  performances from Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Big Head Todd & the Monsters,  Bruce Cockburn, Suzanne Vega, The Cowboy Junkies, The Barenaked Ladies & more!   I personally own 3 copies of this CD.   1 is always parked in the CD changer in my car!

3. WBCN Naked Disc - this was the first disc that started the Naked Disc Series (there are 5 CD's in the Series).   This features Live In-Studio Acoustic (Naked) Performances from U2, Tori Amos, Beck, Live, Bush, The Police, Better Than Ezra & more! 

4. WXRV Live  From The Music Hall Volume 2 - The version of REM's  "Fall On Me" by local Folk Trio Cry, Cry, Cry is worth the price of this CD!   But if that's not enough, Bruce Cockburn, Ani DiFranco, Midge Ure, Sinead Lohan & more round out this superlative CD.

5. WBMX This is Mix Music: The Class of 98.5 - this was the first CD that WBMX produced in a series of 4 Annual CD's.  The Barenaked Ladies kick things off & this CD is FILLED with Live, Exclusive hits from Eagle-Eyed Cherry, The Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, Sister Hazel, The Cranberries, Counting Crows & More!   Plus, there's a Surprise Ending!

6. WBCN Naked Too - the Second Naked (Acoustic, Unplugged) CD from WBCN.    More Barenaked Ladies (BNL just LOVES Boston!), David Bowie, Jewel, Guster, Fastball, Eagle Eyed Cherry, Scott Weiland (by himself!) & More!   Plus, one of my favorite local Boston bands - The Folk Implosion!

OK, I listed SIX!   I could have listed 10!   All 6 of these CD's are very enjoyable to listen to and there's something for just about every musical taste in these CD's. 

A quick rule of thumb - WBMX, WXRV, & WBOS tend to be more "Adult Alternative" oriented. If you enjoy KFOG, KMTT, WXPN, KGSR, you will like these stations. 

WXRV tends to feature a lot more local bands as well as newer, non-mainstream, up & coming artists. 

The first 2 WBCN Naked Discs featured more mainstream Alternative artists, while their later Naked Discs appealed more to the college-age listeners as did WBCN itself.   FYI - WBCN is the KFOG of Boston - it's the most established commercial FM Station in Boston. 

WLZX is the Classic Rock Station in Boston and their Live Compilation CD features exclusive cuts from Boston's Aerosmith and Boston, plus Jimmy Buffet, The Allman Brothers, Tom Petty and more.

WAAF features more Hard Rock/Grunge/Metal Bands plus their CD's all feature Live On-Air comedy from Opie & Anthony who got their start at WAAF before being fired (what else is new?).

Live Radio Compilation CD's are what brought me to eBay back in 1998!   I started buying them to add to my collection, then sold and continue to sell and buy them today.
