Tune-up Your 009 Bosch Distributor!
First off, Remove the cap and check the spark points on the inside of the cap where the rotor makes contact....
If its shows wear and burn marks, it would be time to replace the cap and rotor.
Points! Check the points, If they're burning clean, should be a nice gray area with a little arc build up, 6000 miles ( not burning through the contact point ) you can file that surface down to retain a good spark. If the contact cap is show wear or its close to the bottom line replace the points. There is two set of points sold for your 009. First is the stock replacement Bosch #01 011 and they sell for $3.95 a set. Second is the Tiger stripe point also made by Bosch #01 030 and they sell for $9.95. Tiger point get a little better performance and last a lot longer.
Condenser! If your Points where burnt ( crater affect on the contact point ) you need to replace the condenser. Note; if you never do maintance on your points they will burn and you won't need a new condenser.
Ok Lets get started.....
I removed the distributor for the detail pictures, there is no need to remove the distributor when you do your tune-up.
Remove the cap and leave the wires on for now.
Remove the rotor & points.
Lube the lopes with ignition lube.
Install the point and set the gap.
We start off with .016 .406mm filler gauge.
Put the rotor and cap on. ( plus the dust cover if you have one )
Now its easy to transfer the plug wires over from the old cap to the new cap. Firing order 1-4-3-2.
Ok! time to time it.....
I used a old Sears timing light and a Mac et 805 dwell rpm volt meter. First I check the dwell set it from 48 to 52 on the meter. setting the points at .016 loose set it at 50. perfect!
Setting the timing ... maximum advance, set it between 28 and 32 degrees at 2800+ rpm. On Lynn's 69 westy we set it at 30 degrees. Fair tork for those hills!
Tools.... Timing Light, dwell rpm volt meter, 10mm socket, Screw Driver.
Time, 22 min and one beer!
