Is there such a thing? I think so. The two specific series I'd like to discuss are DK's Eyewitness Books and EDC Usborne's Internet-Linked Books. I own and sell both. I am currently a retailer, but I am also a former educator. It is important to foster a love of reading and of learning early in a child's life. These books, while geared toward the 9-12 year olds, can do that even in young children.

The DK Eyewitness books are one of the most trusted series among educators. These books contain fabulous photographs and short, simple descriptions. On each page there is a summary in a larger type than the rest of the text. The rest of the page consists of photos and brief descriptions based on the summary. Each book is designed for ages 8 and up; however, if supervised, I believe they can be valuable for engaging even 3 & 4 year olds. Here's how... As I mentioned, there is only a one paragraph summary on each page. Take this summary and read it to your child. Yes, some of it may go over their heads, but the photographs are interesting enough that they will capture your child's attention. As their attention span grows, introduce more of the information. With my 4 year old, we usually read a page or two at a time and then put it down. I let him guide me and direct me with his interests.

For the older child, this series is excellent reference material. Again, it is formatted in short sections so as to retain attention. They can be used for general knowledge, reports, homework, etc. As an adult, I have learned things from these books. In my opinion, they are good for all ages. Their many topics of interest include: Impressionism, Mammal, Bird, Mummy, Whale, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, Mars, Book, Hurricane & Tornado, and many more.

Eyewitness Books

The EDC Usborne Internet-Linked Books are unique. They, too, are designed with the 9-12 year old in mind. Like the Eyewitness books, I feel that they can be utilized by the younger child as well as those into adulthood. This series also includes fantastic photography. They are also written with short descriptions and summaries so that they can be digested in short intervals. The photographs are so well done that they are beautiful to look at even without the words. Although they are internet-linked, they can stand on their own - you DO NOT need a computer to utilize them fully. That being said, the internet-linked feature is a wonderful bonus that enhances the experience. They were first introduced to the United States in 2000 and are the first series of its kind here. How it works... There is a small block on the page that says "Internet-Linked" or "Internet-Referenced" There will be a link to the usborne website. On that site, you will be asked for a page numer. You will then be provided with links pertaining to that topic. There are over 10,000 webistes that are regularly reviewed by Usborne for safety and content. There are links to pronounciation guides, homework help, quizzes, coloring pages, virtual keyboards and more.

In my opinion, these books can be used in the same manner as the Eyewitness books - in short spurts for the younger children and as references for older children and adults. Usborne now publishes over 200 titles that are internet-linked. There are topics such as: World Geography, Mysteries of Science, Modern Art, Art, Asia and many more.

EDC Usborne IL Books

Given my own experience with my children, my experience as an educator and my experience as a retailer of these books; I can honestly say that these two series of books would make a wonderful addition to anyone's library or coffee table - no matter what their age. They are also a way to help educate our children - homeschool, public school or private school - in a manner that they will enjoy. Please visit me eBay store for a selection of these wonderful books.
