Cats are mammal, called felines. They have retractile claws unlike their cousin the cheetah who also has awakings in the dog family and no retractable claws. In changing light a cats pupils go from large to thin lines. The cheetah once it has been domesticated is more like a dog than a cat and breeds with difficulty. Tigers and Jaguars also have difficulty in breeding if they have be come domesticated. The lynx and wild cat takes a lot of patience & efforts to be domesticated, so often times they never are.
Our kitty friends started as Mitridae's 40 million years ago. Next came the Otaiidae - fur seal - they are well suited to catching fish, then the Canidae - fox and lastly the Felidae - wild cat. Some people belive that our favorite kitty's are direct descendants of the wild cat. While they are the same they are not.
The wild cat, especially the rare omes in Europe, are more heavily built, limbs are longer. Their fur is usually a yellowish color, very thick on the tail, has black markings with black ears. The Nubian Wild Cat is a subspecies - could pass for our domesticated cat - but the fur coloring is totally different.
The Jungle Cat - Chaus - is between the lynx & the wild cat. It resembles the lynx but is calmer and much more easygoing. The Pallas Cat - Manual - is of lighter weight than the Wild Cat. A very dangerous kitty in the roughest sense, bold and aggressive. The Fishing Cat - Viverrine - has high dexterity - and while it prefers cats its not against killing domesticated animals irregardless of the breed.
