I would like to know where the part about high ported bits will hurt the pallate on a horse's mouth, I would like to make a statement on that. I make bits and spurs and to my understanding some of the older high port spade bits with a roller in them could hurt a pallate, but wouldnt you have to tie the horses mouth shut and use a loose curb strap so the port could swing high enough to hit the pallate then you might do some damage to the palate depending on the bit and the curb strap. Dont you think the horse/mule that had a port as to say hit the pallate of its mouth it would open its mouth to not allow the port to hit the pallate.
The more modern bits that have a high port with no roller in them (just the high port), is for tounge room only. I make a chain/port bit and the mouth piece in my bits never move, and have never to my knoledge ever hit the horses pallate.
I have used alot of high port bits and never had a horse have a problem with the pallate due to the use of a high port bit. I have never herd of a high port bit hurting a horse or mule. I have never herd of anyone saying that there horse or mule had a sore pallate from the port hitting or rubbing on the pallate.
A snaffle has no tounge room for a horse or mule if you put some common sence to how the bits really work, you can check out my bits at scottironworks.com I have a chain/port mouth piece that is the most comfortable bit you can use on a horse/mule.
