Bi-Amping a Sound System.

What is bi-amping? If your speakers have two sets of speaker wire attachments ( 2 for + and 2 for - leads, or one set for the woofers and one set for the mid-range and tweeters), then you can Bi-Amp your speakers.  Bi-amping (using two identical amplifiers) is similar to using a subwoofer to relieve the amplifier (and woofers) from the task of playing the lowest range. It will relieve one of the amps from playing the very high range, and the other from playing the low range. With less to process, each amp will preform faster and more accurately. It also opens you up to a lot of other options. Higher frequency sound waves travel from the speakers to your ears at a much different speed than the lower frequencies do. Some amplifiers, especially the "better ones", provide an adjustable delay feature to adjust for individual speaker distances. Unfortunately, the best that the amplifier can do is to delay the sound for the entire range (all frequencies) to that speaker. If you have two amps, you can delay the sound for the high range separately from the low range. Bi-amping you system also allows you to increase the volume on the higher or lower frequencies, without effecting the other. It does help if the amps are identical; one remote controls both amps. Simply turn on one amp at a time to do the set up.

Will your system play twice as loud? No. But if your one of those people, like me, who has an acoustically correct room with nothing more than a chair, a table and a fairly elaborate sound system in it; than bi-amping might just prove to be a huge advantage to you also.

Bi-Wiring a Sound System

Bi-wiring is using two sets of wires to run from your amp to your speakers. One run connects the high pass on the speakers to the amplifier, while the other run is connected from the low pass on the speaker to the same amplifier often to the same posts. I'm not at all convinced that simply bi-wiring a set of speakers will do any good for sound quality. Then again, I'm not convinced that paying for over priced exotic speaker wire will do you any good either. Especially if your now buying twice as much. It comes down to this, if someone can convince you that it will sound better, then chances are you will believe that it does sound better.
