Beware of Weight Loss Scams - Red Flags to Look For

Weight loss scams prey on individuals who already feel a loss of hope. Don't buy into these dubious diet products! There are many advertisements for creams, patches, wraps, equipment, supplements and drugs that crop up faster than the U.S. Federal Trade Commission can go after them. As a result, the agency issued a list of "false promises" it says that consumers need to be aware of.

Avoid any product that claims to:

  • Cause weight loss of two or more pounds a week for a month or longer without diet or exercise.
  • Cause substantial weight loss no matter what or how much you eat.
  • Cause permanent weight loss, even when you stop using the product (drug or supplements).
  • Block the absorption of enough fat or calories to cause substantial weight loss.
  • Cause substantial weight loss for everyone who uses it.
  • Cause substantial weight loss by wearing it on your body, or rubbing it into your skin.

There you have it. Directly from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Not only do these drugs and methods not work, if you have an undiagnosed condition, such as heart disease, high blood pressure or arrhythmia, just to name a few, many of these drugs can be  fatally harmful. Vanity is a poor cause of death. Please don't buy into it.

If you need help eating correctly your Doctor or other health professional will be able to advise you of where to get help. Many can put you in contact with a licensed dietician or help you get information on weight loss programs and meetings in your area.

Losing weight is hard work. It doesn't happen overnight and it doesn't come in a package. Become knowledgeable about healthy eating habits and find a calorie burning program that interests you. I hate aerobics, so the quickest way for me to fail would be to join an aerobics class. But I love to Power Walk and run, so that's where I burn most of my calories. You have to find what makes you feel good while shedding those pounds. Experiment and try a few things. If you don't like one form of exercise try another until you find what works for you and holds your interest.
