There are a lot of fake Gibson guitars turning up on ebay and other auction sites lately.  These guitars are made in China and are of very poor quality.  They are violating Gibson's trademark and copyright and using Gibson's name without permission.  But most importantly to you the consumer, the guitars are cheap and will not make you happy.  I see a lot of Ace Frehley models claiming to be real Gibsons on ebay - but they are fakes.  The fakes say Gibson on the headstock, say Made in the USA on the back of the headstock, have Ace's face on the front of the headstock, have the Ace Frehley signature on the 12th fret, but they still aren't the real thing.  A lot of these are showing up with colors Gibson never used on that model, or with pickups that Gibson didn't use on that model.  In particular, the Gibson Ace Frehley models, both Epiphone and Gibson, all had three Dimarzio pickups.  Go to Dimarzio's website and examine the appearance of their Super Distortion pickup.  This was used on all of the production Ace Frehley models. These pickups use two rows of allen-head screws in their creme colored bobbins.  Most of the fakes are using inferior pickups that are clearly not Dimarzio.  Ace demanded that Dimarzio Super Distortion or PAF/Dual Sound pickups be used exclusively on his signature model.  Gibson used the Dimarzio PAF/Dual Sound model in addition to the Super Distortion model only on the very expensive and limited run Custom Shop models.  I've also seen some fake Ace Frehley models with only two humbuckers - an instant giveaway.

Gibson's official website has a link that will show you in detail how to tell a real Gibson from the fakes being cranked out in China.  Do a Google search for "gibson.com" and "fakes" to get the url. (ebay prohibits I include it here).  Gibson encourages those not sure if they are buying a real Gibson to call or email them and ask.  They, along with all of the major guitar manufacturers, are working hard to stem the flow of these cheap Chinese guitars that are sporting the Gibson name.

Be careful out there kids!  Don't be tricked by hustlers and don't settle for something that only has a passing resemblence to what you think you're getting.  Save up for the real thing.  You'll have something you'll enjoy and be proud to own and it will likely increase in value over the years.
