Buyer Beware! If you buy games, cds,or dvds, new or used you could be scammed. This could happen online, at fleamarkets, even WalMart. Yes, thats right this could happen at WalMart. Thats where it happened to me.Heres my story.

My son had been wanting a certain Xbox game for some time and we could only buy it new at the time. So when he got the $50 to buy the game we headed to our local WalMart. We live in a small town and this is actually our only store in town to buy games. When we arrived at WalMart there was only one of this particular game on the shelf. After finally getting help to purchase the game we went home, my son excited that he had his long awaited game. When we arrived at home my son proceeded to open his brand new game complete with the wrapper. When he opened the case we were shocked to see in the book slot of the case was a piece of folded printer paper, and where his new $50 game should have been sat an AOL Free Trial disk. I couldn't believe this was happening. After my initial shock had passed I realized this wasn't going to look good on my part when I returned to WalMart. My fears were confirmed when I arrived at WalMart and the lady at the service desk instantly thought I was the scammer. Of course she did , it looked as if I was bringing this back and telling her I wanted a refund because unless she had a new shipment in the last hour, this was the last one on the shelf when I paid $50 for it. Naturally I was becoming somewhat upset. Here my son and I had come to shop and now after paying our money an hour later we were being totally humiliated at WalMart. Finally the lady called for someone in security. After showing him my receipt and explaining the situation to him he called the sales clerk aside and told her he had seen this scam before and it was common at flea markets. I got my refund that day but I'll never get over the humiliation of what happened to me and my son. I am much more careful now.

Bottom line, beware of these scams. This is how it works. The scammer buys the game and replaces the disk with a worthless one and where the book is they insert plain old paper. The purpose of this is so that if you shake the case you can hear the cd rattle. Then they have the little machine to wrap the case so it appears to be new and unopened. These machines can be purchased anywhere and anyone can get one. Then they return it to the store appearing to be unopened and get a refund. Now they have the game and the money. The honest shopper is then the one who appears to be the scammer.

I don't know if incidents like this have forced retailers to be more cautious when accepting returns or not but I hope so. I know I'm a much more cautious shopper.
